i to am looking at a patio smoker from johnson. so i guess it is safe to say no one has any drawbacks with the quality of work or function of his smokers, mainly the patio line.
they look very good in quality. my main question is on the stacks down exiting from the center of the smoker. do they draft well???? and does his reverse flow design work well.
i am going to talk to him and go for a visit. they look look really well built

Where are you located Slowcook?
If you are close to Dallas I can most likely arrange to have you get a good close up.

I would think that it makes the most sense to have the exhaust ports located at mid-pit level? Chad's Reverse Flow System works as advertised!

I was looking at a pic they have on their website of their smoker trailer. They have it fired up and it looks like smoke is escaping from the firebox, the main chamber and the warming chamber as well as the smoke stack. Not sure if they just don't have the doors closed securely or what....if not, I don't like seeing the smoke leaking out of it!

All I can tell you is that they season each one with a load of Pecan, during which Chad checks for leaks & that the one I cook on has no such issues.

Damon,
Can you give me an update on your smoker? I pick mine up on Sunday. It's the same pit as yours but it's on a 6 foot trailer. I know it's too late as mine is already built and waiting on me to get there but stumbled on this forum while looking for Johnson Smoker's site. I'm sure I will be more than happy with this pit as I have been with the whole experince of dealing with Chad on the build. He seems like a great person and is more than happy to assist in any way he can. I didn't make the drive from Houston to see the pit in person before the purchase.

I think you are going to be quite happy with your choice! I think it is a heck of a Pit for the money. What are you upgrading from?
Let us know what you think.

Sorry Mod, I will try & do better.

The pit I have been chatting about would hang off both sides of a 6 foot trailer??

This is my pit. It is 30" diameter and 9 feet in total length with a 7 foot cooking chamber. I cooked on it last weekend for the first time and I had a bit of a time keeping it at tempature. I'm sure that will get better the more I use it. I am upgrading from just a small porch smoker. It is 20" diameter and 48" cooking chamber but I have cooked on larger pits with the cookoff team I'm on.

That does indeed look familiar. Chad likes to cook with all 3 firebox vents wide open. I tend to experiment a tad more than that.

Yea he did tell me to leave everything wide open and just use wood to control the fire when I picked it up. Guess I will experiment more this weekend since I'm finally off for a weekend. I don't have a facebook so I couldn't see the pic!!

What have you put in the Firebox to burn wood? So far just a fireplace grate for me.

I had a much easier time during this cook but I was constanly checking on it every 10 minutes, but I'm more satified now. I had some grating at the job that I put in there. Probably need to figure something else out to put in there. How does ther fireplace grate work? Never thought about trying that!
