Matt's BBQ Pits
Anyone running one of Matt's pits? I'm looking at his 2454 Fine Tune and would like to hear some real world results before dropping $2K on it.

I have never heard of them. The cooker looks like a nice build on their site.

They're in San Antonio. It does look like good build quality from the pics. I don't know much about smoker construction, but know there's more to it than welding up some metal to make make 'em smoke right. A couple of testimonials would help lighten my wallet.

I too was also looking into his bbq pits, but don't ask him to do anything custom to one of his pits. I was wanting the jumbo firebox pit he builds but I wanted a custom smoke stack design, like Aaron Franklin has on his pits. He then questioned me why I wanted it that way, and said its a waste of my money and his time to build the pieces for a stack like that. He basically did not want to do it at all, which really turned me away from doing business with him.

The pits looks well made. Not sure if the smoke stack being off to one side of the pit would create a cold spot one the front right corner (near the firebox) or not.

I went to see these pits and the quality is terrible. The welding is disgusting and is very ugly. Weld slag everywhere and its not a consistent weld bead. I wouldn't recommend these pits.

Thanks for the feedback. Cosmetics or structural issues? Were all of them consistently bad or ?
I found an owner testimonial from a guy that bought one of his trailer smokers a couple of weeks ago and was happy with it. Not sure about cross-linking to another BBQ site, so I'll paraphrase here.
I'm using Matt from Matt's BBQ Pits in Pipe Creek, Tx. After talking to a few builders and even a few of the big boys in Houston, I decided he was offering more bang for the buck. Here's a few pics of the guys work off his website. Even better looking in person.

If you google matts bbq pits and zoom in on pics you can see the inconsistent weld bead. Gets wider then skinny then widerrrrrr then skinnnnyyyy. I wasn't happy on how they were made. The guy building them really didn't know much about pits and how they cooked either. (Owners helper that is)

I don't like his choice of wheels, those tiny ones will not roll on dirt/grass and the rear plastic ones won't last past a few years, max..I hate plastic wheels.

Randy S,
Did you pull the trigger on Matt's smokers?
I am also looking for one and for the cost I think is a good pit.
I also looked at a pit maker in Houston, pits by jj which has a similar smoker for a few hundred bucks more.
HE has very good reviews.
Only draw back is that I need to drive to Houston to go pick it up.

Sorry for the delayed response; yes I picked one up. As one of the other posters called out - the welds could be prettier. That stated, it's solid, cooks great and I have no regrets. Steel wheels on the rear 3"x12" and steel casters on the front. The grill plates for the main chamber are slotted for airflow so you can use it as a big grill or you can put in the tuning plates and smoke away.
You can see the grill plates/liners and the tuning plates stacked on top of them in this pic.
*edited to fix pics
