I know I'm old but I was more concerned about the firebox.

A good friend of mine had one of their charcoal pedestal pits and he burned out the charcoal pan then right through the bottom fairly quick (he had it either 5 or 6 years). They look very well made and they do cook well (at least the charcoal pits) but IMO the metal is too thin.

If you burn on the grate and not the FB bottom and keep the ash swept out it should last a good while. I gave my Chagriller outlaw away last fall I had it for 7 yrs. With steady use the fire box was not even close to burning out and it was 11 ga 1/3 the thickness of 3/16 ths

I'm looking at this same pit. I like the features on it. Ive narrowed down my choices between this one and the Old Country Brazos at Academy. Both very close on price ($60 difference) and both are 3/16 steel. I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on the two compared.

I can't comment on which brand is better but for the money it's hard to beat the Old Country stuff.
I bought the Pecos, which is similar to the Brazos (but the Brazos is a little larger with thicker skin).
Nothing Old Country builds will match up to a custom made or expert made pit but the buy in is pretty painless and they do work for backyard smoking.

I would make sure it lives under a patio roof/cover and never gets wet

to know...
any cooker that lives out in the weather
if you let it get rained on and the ashes in the firebox get wet, the alkali in the wet ash will accelerate the corrosion
I've cooked on OldSmokeys all my life. me and OldSmokeys are from Houston
they are made out of 24ga aluminized sheet metal
you have to be disciplined to clean them after every cook or they really won't last
if i only had one cooker it would be a 22" OldSmokey

and a cover and garbage can lid over that for when it's stored

If you have an HEB close by, especially an HEB plus, they sell the AS feeder pits. They'd be WAAAYYYY cheaper than Buc's price.
