Fire Box paint

Postby deepsouthbbq » Thu May 19, 2016 5:47 pm

I know I've read some comments before but didn't really get a clear cut.
What do you guys recommend for painting a firebox, or should I have to blast off the surface rust but wonder if I may just need to oil it, maybe treat it like a cast iron pot.

Truth be known you will be hard pressed to get your firebox over 800° Most firebox paint fails because they are not properly prepared before paint. If you have it blasted and primed with an inorganic zinc primer then top coated it will last for a very long time.
This is a reading of the top of my firebox when she is running at over 350°

Inorganic zinc primer -- had to look that one up.

This contact between two dissimilar metals, when in the presence of an electrolyte, will form a galvanic cell. The zinc particles become the anode in the galvanic cell and the steel substrate serves as the cathode. Galvanic action causes the zinc to be preferentially corroded while the steel is protected from attack. Zinc coatings are unique in that they provide protection to the steel surface even at voids, scratches, pinholes and other small defects in the coating system.

Thanks K.A.M, I would like to have that done to mine. The problem is that my pit is 2 tone paint. And finding someone that can blast the fire box and the area just forward of it on the bottom and not mess up the trailer paint.

I had mine all done at once which makes it easier. They blasted trailer and cooker then primed. Then they painted my cooker and trailer last after they covered my cooker.

I think I remember seeing that in your photos. But my trailer is red where as the fire box pit is of course black. Where I think ours was all black?

Did you coat the entire trailer and pit in zinc or just the fire box?

Thanks guys. I was planning on blasting everything at once as well and painting I have the primer for the trailer and was using some rustoleum for the trailer. But I''m very glad to hear there are sollutions for the firebox. I was really thinking that know matter what I did it would burn off.
I will keep some updates of the restorations.

Yes mine was black on black. In your case they would prime cooker and trailer with the zinc then top coat the cooker. Then they would mask off and wrap the cooker to paint the trailer red.

The trailer and cooker were zinc primed.

I am really not looking to get the whole thing re-painted, its not that old. But I would like to get the fire box coated at least and a small section forward of the fire box on the bottom side of the main chamber. I end up having to re-paint my fire box at least once a year and one time twice. I have have to do the same with the steak/fajita cooker on it as well. But I am a firm believer of keeping fresh paint on it.
