Reverse flow offset smoker

Postby Egghead_512 » Wed Feb 01, 2017 1:08 am

Hello! New to the forum. Looking for any recommendations in the Austin area for custom offset reverse flow builders. Nothing crazy...just something well built for home use. If anyone knows a dealer or small business I'd be thankful for your guidance. Thank you!

Theres builder in Tyler. If I remember its chuck wagon smokers. He makes a dang good pit at a very reasonable price. The other builder I use is HBTsmokers but he is in Alabama.

I've seen the East Texas Smoker Company in person and visited with the pit owners. They all liked the pit and all but one said the service they received was good.

I'm going to throw in the obligatory Shirley Fabrication mention. I know they are in Alabama but if you can hook up with someone near you to look at theirs…night and day compared to the rest.

I found BBQ comps to be a good place to shop pits :) just don't do it when the teams are busy. They all like to show off their toys.

Of course, having just joined Team Lang with my obligatory ball cap, I want to give a shout to Lang, the originator of the species. I think Ben Lang has been fabricating his legendary reverse flow offset smokers since 1988. I thought the Lang "griddle plate" aka reverse flow baffle plate was a gimmick until I did my first cook. The neighbors with whom I shared some Que said it was the best that they've had.

You may want to check out Craigslist to find you a Lang for less. That's what I did and I drove down to Dallas to get mine. The Lang welds won't be as pretty as a Shirley but Lang is a perennial contender and you won't go wrong with one!

You may want to go trade it in on a Klose.

Thanks Grailsback!

I have to take my hat off to Mr. Klose. That Continental Airlines Boeing 777 BBQ Smoker was a hoot. I must say that it's hard to top that one. I keep checking out Klose's site and the one I'd want would set me back about $6-7K !! Too rich for me, at least until the kids finish college :(

Yes, that pit was quite the creation. And it is still in use today. I saw it a few weeks ago down at the cook off here in Houston. Although they have since renamed it United. He has quite an array of unique pits out there, including the worlds largest that sits outside of Brenham Tx. on 290. I agree with you that they are at the high end of the price range, but the quality matches it.

I got lucky when they built mine as they didn't have anything in the trailer shop at the time. So I only had to wait the amount of time that it took them to make it. Which was about 4 months. But well worth the wait and I couldn't be happier with the quality that I ended up with.

Good luck with your new purchase. I am sure you will get many years of enjoyment out of it.
