Posting some pictures of the rehabilitated COS as requested.
As you can see the firebox door is on the opposite side of the smoke chamber. Put some old mower wheels on the heavy end that roll better than the stock ones and moved them to the other set of legs. Also, made a firebox support that angles down to the frame. Installed the smoker door latches and lava seal around both the firebox and smoke chamber. You can just make out the "new" 4 inch vent on the end of the firebox. I used VHT high temp paint that does not blister when it is applied directly to bare metal. I painted over the stock paint on the firebox and the manufacturer's paint blisters and cracks. Where I removed the paint for sealing or welding the paint is perfect. I used jam nuts on all the bolts to keep them tight.
Made a little nylon cutting board shelf for the front that folds. Temperature guages are okay. HD ones, will change them out to better ones in the future.
Tough to see in this photo but this is the ceramic plates after seasoning and a nice layer of rendered fat.
Smoker door reinforcing angle on the hinge and latch ends.
Coal box and smaller wood pellet box.
This is a flame guard/heat shield from the firebox to the backside of the angled ceramic plate. Keeps that section of the plate from getting too hot. Works pretty well as the firebox end has the lowest temperature of the two. About 15-20 degrees cooler than the far end. I also put a heat shield on the firebox door and opposite side as well to help retain heat. Seems to work as the paint doesn't blister in that area. The only area where I see blistering is each sided of the flame guard to the smoke chamber.
