Well, it was apparently the dryer vent mode on the smoke stack. I removed it and now my logs burn when the firebox is closed.

Hey when you say it was apparently the dryer vent mode on the smoke stack. What exactly does that mean im having the same issue.

The "dryer vent mode" is pretty simple. You use a hardware store dryer vent to extend the stack to grate level. It draws the smoke out at grate level rather than heat and smoke riding the top of the smoker to the stack exit.

My bad on the vent. The Ok. Joe Highland has a side exhaust. My old Ok. Joe has a top exhaust with an extension 4-5" down. With the side exit it would require a flex pipe. Either a true dryer vent tube or a flexible exhaust tube.

I put a fan about 18” from the side vent to maintain airflow. Makes a huge difference.

Google BBQ smoker calculator. You will then enter either the firebox dimensions or the cook chamber dimensions and it will spit out what size cook chamber your firebox can support or what size firebox your cook chamber needs. It will also tell you smokestack length and diameter, firebox to cook chamber opening size and air inlet size. You can then compare what it says to what you have and then decide how to proceed.

My Highland did not draw enough air, so I ran a 10" fan into the firebox door vent and it still choked up. Got to looking at the bigger stacks on Old Countrys and Franklins, dual stacks on others so...
Just recently I got a 2nd stock stack from Charboiler/OKJoe and a 2-15/16" hole saw. Deadblow hammer installed it next to and 45 degree lower, so that the stacks are about 7/16" apart (incase I had to attach #2 to #1) Breathes easy now, without a fan stuck in the firebox door and burns hotter. Had to downsize my splits. Can build a tiny fire, a single half of a 1/8 split = 3" dia x 7 inch long ( on embers) at the vent end and preheat another in the same box at the chamber end. Each lasts about 25-30 minutes then move it over (with tongs) and add another to preheat. I can slip two 3 NPS sch 40 x 36 inch sleeves over the 3" OD x 18" stacks but not sure yet that it is better than 2@18". Biscuit test shows a cooler zone away from the chamber door, mighta shoulda kept the 2nd stack even with the 1st . Still kicking the tires on a Horizon 20" classic icon.....
