For flower pot cookers

Changed out my gaskets on my mini and small BGEs

Used this stuff

Made a jig
Image

Applied the gasket material
Image

Shaped it with the jig
Image

After doing mini, adjusted jig to fit small
Image

Small and mini finished

Mini cruising along at 900 degrees dome temp - neaux gasket issues
Image

Put a handful of apple chips on and closed down the vents - all good

My patent attorney advised that I should be eggspecting substantial royalty payments for the unique jig design and manufacture. In lieu of royalty payments, I will sell the patent rites along with the original jig for a reasonable offer.

Cranked up the small BGE this evening ran it up to 650 and held for 30 minutes. Then put some apple chips on and closed the vents to low and slow gaps. Small leaks on one side of the egg which should be insignificant.

Great minds think somewhat alike. I used that stuff to reattach the woodstove gasket when it started coming off. Never thought to just use the silicon.

Dave,

I went through several gaskets and hopefully this is my last stop.

XL - Two felt, one nomex and one rutland
Small - One felt and one rutland
Mini - Two felt and one rutland (dealer gave me a replacement felt when I picked up the mini - obviously pretty sure I was going to fry the OEM felt)

Felts - fried
Nomex - Worked good but seemed to harden after a year and was coming up in one spot - I attribute that to a bad installer, me
Rutland - worked well but started to unravel where I cut it - another me problem

You would think the flower pot makers could come up with a better mousetrap - I'm not complaining and don't mind changing the gaskets but it is an area that could use improvement.

It has a good feel when closing the dome - I think it is going to work out fine. BTW - only did the base.

I haven't heard of anyone using polyurethane.

Me either. Ceramics have a small gap between the top and bottom of the clam shell. I don't think you could get enough layers of poly on to fill the gap.

The gaskets they come with just suck for lack of a better word. I haven't had problems with gaskets getting hard but then again I usually smoke L&S. I have problems with them either losing adhesion (falling off) or more often absorbing grease/moisture. When the latter happens the top 'glues' itself to the bottom when the weather gets cold, making it a real pain to open.

You would think that some one would come up with a better mousetrap.

ok i see what i did. not enough info. LOL

in polyurethane, i was more referring to the urethane that is used say for holding in a windshield. as in one that comes in a tube as opposed to the one for sealing wood.
