I trying decide what to go with for a new cooker. The Mrs. wants another ceramic, so offsets and pellet munchers are off the menu for now. If I went for a straight replacement it would be this:
The following two are +/- a few dollars what the insurance check should be. I know and have cooked on BGEs, quaility product. The Saffire is new to me but the stainless steel hardware and cart might be a plus in this salty air. I left a saw out overnight and its rusty already.
These will add a couple hundred out of pocket, trying to decide if they are worth the extra bucks. Much bigger cooking area to be sure.
No worries about the stairs now, I got the elevator up and running off the deck.

I know nothing about flower pot cooking but I would think that the PLO would allow more capacity and better placement of the meat on the grate.

Re: Question for the ceramic guys or wanna be ceramic guys.
Dave,
I started with an XL then added a Small and my dealer compted a mini for demo cooks I did for them. I like them all but if I were doing it over again, I would start with the Large. I voted for a large BGE. You know I'm a BGE zealot but I would go with a primo before the other flower pots simply on reputation. Just me.
The Small gets the most activity at our house but of course we are only two at the house. The mini sees more action than the XL.
There are occasions when the XL comes in handy but I can only think of two occasions when a large wouldn't do. Both times I had 12 slabs of BBs on 4 levels on the XL - to be honest, I just wanted to see if I could do it. The main advantage of the XL is more grilling space (as opposed to smoking). You can fit a lot of burgers on the XL. I could probably put 8-9 butts on the XL on two levels but I don't have a need to do so. Pretty sure you could fit 5 and maybe 6 butts on a large.
You can fit a lot of groceries on a Large especially if you cook/smoke on more than one level. I have seen pics of folks draping a very large brisket over an inverted "V" rack but have seen plenty flat on the grid as well. If you compare prices, you can likely get a large and small for not much more than an XL. Advantage of having a large and small is cooking at two different temps or setting up the large for a long smoke and using the small for burgers, steaks, chicken, etc. while smoking on the large.
Another advantage of the Large is there are more eggcerories available. Ceramic Grill Store makes various contraptions for all sizes but the one with the most is the large - likely because there are more large owners that out there than other sizes.
My dos centavos
Good luck with your decision.
