I am an offset guy but cooked on an Egg last weekend while at a friends place.
Do most owners here buy the specific BGE charcoal or is there a less pricey & easier to find alternative??
I am in the Dallas area.

Re: BGE Fuel Cost
I suspect some folks buy the BGE brand but I don't. BGE is made by Royal Oak. I use RO or others that may be on sale.

Second on RO. It is available, relatively cheap, and occasionally you can catch a sale.

I'll use any lump except for Cowboy brand.....plywood and plastic don't make for good eats.

65% of people on Amazon gives this junk a 1/5 stars. This review sums it up:
1.0 out of 5 stars
Avoid like the plague
This is some of the worst lump charcoal I have ever dealt with. A large proportion of the wood appears to be various types of pre-milled wood and I can only hope that it was unprimed. It burns with enough ash to make it nearly useless for anything but a quick steak, which is about all the time you have as it burns very quickly compared to other lump that have used. There are far too many "fines" and dust in the bag and virtually none of the contents are the size of "lumps" (my four bags were packed in an original sealed box, from Lowe's, so should have not suffered extensive shipping damage).

Re: BGE Fuel Cost
If you have access to Restaurant Depot they were selling Lazzari, 40lbs for about $14.00. It is mesquite and I have used over 200lbs.
It does have some big pieces so you may need to break those down.
It is more dense than RO and takes a little longer to light. But burns hotter, longer and way less ash. Did I mention $14.00 for 40lbs!!
A lot of the restaurants use it or they would not sell it.
Anyway it will not impart any mesquite flavor into your cook so add what ever smoking wood of your choice. So light, let it go clear smoke on you are on the way.

Lazzari is list as 'above average' on the charcoal rating site.

Fogo premium is the way to go. You can order Prime on Amazon. It's superior to BGE and cheaper.

Re: BGE Fuel Cost
I got tired of the chunks of concrete in the BGE brand... I've been using B&B that you can find at Acadamy for $15... Nice big chunks, and burns long and hot. For the $'s I'm satisfied.
