I keep hearing great things about the ceramic cookers, and I'm about to pull the trigger and cough up the money. It's been almost a year since I bought my last smoker, so I figure it's about time to add yet another to my ensemble. But I have to ask - how much smoke can you get out of this thing? It seems like it would be harder to get the wood smoke going in the ceramic cookers, with the reduced airflow and all. Do the cookoff pros use these?
Also, is Primo the way to go?

I have a Primo and an Imperial. I only use lump in them. A chimney full will last 12 hours (depending on the brand of lump). Once in a while I'll put some wood in, but just for added smoke and only a small piece or two.
Several teams use ceramics. But they are cumbersome to haul around.

As Dave mentioned, several teams use a ceramic for comps.
I get plenty of smoke. You have to use lump which is wood anyway, and I always add a fist size chunk or 3 of whatever type wood I want to use that day.
Personally, and not just because I own one now, but I would look seriously at the Primo.
I like the oval shape which helps with fitting bigger briskets, ribs, etc.
Here is a pictorial of what kind of cooking arrangements you can make and shows the versatility of the XL Oval.
