Pellet smokers

Postby bklinch » Sat Jan 02, 2016 6:17 pm

I would like to add a pellet smoker, but would also like to not exceed $500 ish. I have a Horizon wood pit already, I'm looking for something I can set and forget. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have a Pit Boss from Cabelas that I like and although they don't always carry it but when they do it is priced very nicely.
It is built by Dansen a good company that makes pellet furnaces and pellet grills under other brands.
I have & had Traegers for 15 years and have a Fast Eddy so I do have a basis for comparison.
Things I like about the Pit Boss compared to a Traeger.

Better smoke
Achieves higher heat easily.
Has the wheels on the right end (the heavy end)
Seems to regulate temperature better.
Has a cool down cycle.
Comes with second grate.

If I remember right I gave $400 for the PB.

BTW welcome to the forum.....

I don't know anything about it but Cabelas is a good company and stands behind their products.

Okie SB has a good memory I see Home Depot does carry them at least online.
Prices a bit more than i paid but hey.
Amazon also has them but they are more expensive than HD.

Folks seem to like their Green Mountain pits as well.

Their Daniel Boone model is on sale for $549. I have a friend in SC who loves his. Says it is a quality build. I have no personal experience.

Thanks for the input guys. I see a lot of talk about the Traeger smokers. Are they really worth the extra cost compared to the ones mentioned above?

Go back and read my top post......... and I don't have anything against Traeger I still have two Texas models (075). There are better choices for the money.

one option no one mentioned... you can buy a pellet burning mechanism off e-bay and then supply your cooking vessel of choice and grates if you are handy with the metal working tools, I have the fast eddy and the traeger, if you build your own, I would recommend an insulated cooker of sorts maybe even a clay pot..
