Here's what happens in a pellet cooker, plus I added a chunk of hickory

Postby Chasdev » Thu Jul 25, 2019 3:55 pm

Finally got a chance to take pics of my CampChef feeding pellets and starting to burn them.
I also did a start up with a lump of hickory in the burn chamber to see what would happen.
What happened that it worked great and produced a ton of hickory smoke but then...the temps jumped up to 500 before the chunk burned out...
Also, the fire started to climb up the auger, made it about two inches before I shut down.
I got a little concerned when smoke started coming from the pellet chamber!
The pics depict two different runs, one was normal feed and start up and the ones with the hickory added was run number two which was from scratch with cold cooker but with the hickory added.

Pics are backwards so view from last to first.

Stupid question? Why did you used a chunk for smoke? The pallets already have a specific type of wood!!!

Not to be too silly but I used wood for smoke because that's what makes smoke.
The pictures represent an experiment in adding extra smoke to a pellet burner and to provide a glimpse into what happens when you hit "on".
The experiment was a success extra smoke wise but at the expense of driving the cook grate level temp through the roof, so a practical failure.
