Has anyone tried this? If so do you have any input about it? If not, any thoughts?

It's seems plausible? I like the idea of long burns with no maintenance. Turning the chimney into a fuel cell. Pretty ingenious.
Weber 22.5 slow cook fuel cell? Anyone tried this?

Plausible yes but practical ?
The meat in that photo looks to be covered with soot.
Stumps do work well and I suppose with enough re-engineering a smaller clone is possible.

I like the ring of fire method light 1 end 4 lbs of lump will run 250-275 for 12-16 hrs unattended
Never met a cow I didn't like with a little salt and pepper.

I think it's a really cool idea. If I can pick up an extra 22" rack to cut out for the chimney I may try it.
Another thing I've been thinking about is using a Smokey Joe as a firebox and running a duct from the Smokey Joe to the bottom of the Kettle. I'm not sure if that's feasible for anything other than cold smoking.

YES! Exactly! What's the hottest you've ever run that setup?

I use the minion method with a huge turkey aluminum pan, pushed to one side. If I need more time I just lift grate, set aside and reverse the set up. Did a 8.75 lb brisket this weekend, and had a few people say it was better then any bbq joint around. I'm in Conroe Texas, and people take briskest seriously, so I will take that as a great success.

Iiwelshii
my problem with that method is you don't get any essence of the charcoal or any wood in the flavor of the food
it just turns the kettle into a portable oven
