If it was mine I would treat it like a nice new cast iron skillet. Season well, and clean like cast iron. Wish my grates looked like that. CF

A good hot water & salt scrub w/ a steel wool pad does wonders

Find the cheapest (fattiest) bacon you can find. Turn on the heat and liberally apply the bacon across the grates. Fry the bacon till crispy-crisp. The bacon will be scrap, but your grates will be seasoned. Works like a charm.
