Howdy and Welcome to the Forum
Are you speaking of the Knob on the Tank or the Knob on the Grill

Do you still hear and smell the gas when you cut it off at the Tank

Doesn't sound like the Tank has any problems. It sounds like the problem is in your Grill. Probably a washer or connection or valve that isn't tight enuff or is defective. You might try checking all the connections for proper tightness. If you are very careful you can use a lighter or soapy water (the leaking area/location will form a bubble at the leak) to find the leak but beware of gas accumulation when using a lighted match or lighter. Just be Careful, OK ?
You might even consider getting a "professional" to check this out for you !!
