HELP UUUGLY SMOKE

Postby Bigoar » Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:18 pm

I keep getting an ugly smoke everytime I add a chunk of wood to the smoker. The smoker will be cruzzin along at 250-275 ish and I add wood and here it comes. The smoke will clear in a few minutes but I want to get rid of it all together.
Any suggestions or remedies would be appreciated

Pre-heat your wood on top of the fire box.

+1 on heating wood, also add more air to stop smoldering after it stops readjustment inlet for proper temp.

I agree with the others, Preheat your wood, is your exhaust open all the way? also make sure you have a good fire burning before you add your wood don't wait till it burns too low, open your intake vents for a couple minutes after adding a chunk of wood. Good Luck!

Thanks guys!
1. The smoker is totally insulated as well as the firebox so how hot does the wood need to get?

2.Yes the exhaust is wide open.

3.This smoker is very easy to heat so if I open the intake very long i will get to hot . What is the easiest way to cool it back down to cooking temps?

4.No I usually dont strip the bark .

Thanks again and I'll try all of the geat tips

I preheat my wood in the fire box.I build fire on one side and add 1 preheated piece of wood to the fire and another to the other side of firebox.I am not sure if your firebox is big enough to that but it works well for me.I will crack my door for maybe 20 or 30 seconds and bad smoke will usually clear.

you really should strip the bark. Bark is bitter and smokes a LOT
