No, because the valve is on the outside of the drum ( placed lower than the fire basket ) and is an intake for the unheated outside air ( not the heated air around the fire basket). I doubt you would be cooking at a hot enough heat to melt the insides of a brass valve that is on the outside of the drum.

I'm not sure if its even available, but I'm a big fan of Stainless Steel. The stuff is very resistant to corrosion and gives things a "professional" appearance.

having not ever built a uds, i can't help but wonder why a intake valve would need teflon tape?

no teflon tape but inside the valve itself is a teflon ring for lack of a better term.

alright, so ive hit a small snag.....i nuked the barrel with a super hot 8hr burn that was even stoked by an air compressor through an intake hole! that puppy was shooting out blue flames :angryfire: haha!
i toasted out the red liner from heck on the upper 2/3 but it remains strong on the bottom 1/3.......i cleaned out the inside with with a wire wheel and the bottom 1/3 is laughing in my face :angry5: ....im thinking of nailing it with some heavyduty easy off oven cleaner as i have heard it will strip the liner of doom away and then doing another burn to be safe.
what do yall think???

Agree with this - you can get one at Harbor Freight for around $25 or so (maybe cheaper). They are great to light charcoal with too. I don;t know what I did before I got mine.

20" x 40" Party Gator Pit
Custom Mobile Stick Burner
Summerset TRL 32" Built-In Grill
Weber Q2200
48" Custom Firepit
Bertello Pizza Oven

I can't always please everybody. I'm not bacon.

alright dudes! i had the choice between a remote therm and weed torch.....needless to say i had to borrow my buds small propane torch, it was slow going but i got out 95% of the red liner :)
wed. ill hand sand the inside and rest of the liner, season it up with canola oil(unless there is something better...) and let er rip for 4hrs or so! just picked up a 9# bone in pork shoulder, that should coat the walls with fatty goodness :D
ill smoke the pork on sat and do my best to get pulled pork out of it!
thanks for all the help men!
i will post build/maiden cook pics this weekend.
now i got to find pulled pork recipes...........
