Which lump charcoal for UDS?

Postby El Gato » Fri May 01, 2015 10:58 pm

Looks like I have three choices between HEB & Walmart. B&B (different woods), RO AND Central market.

Was wondering what the preference is for UDS smoking?

Or does it matter?

Thanks.

I don't know if it's available in your area or not, but I've found Cowboys lump charcoal at my local Loews home improvement center and I do believe that it gives the best flavor of all other lump coal that I've tried so far. They use a blend of Oak and Hickory. If you ever run across it you should at least give it a try. :dont: Otherwise my vote goes to RO...

I like to cook low around 225-250 and I have found that I really can't even use lump in my uds because it burns so hot. I do sometimes mix lump and briquettes because I like the natural smokiness from lump.

I only use lump and cook around 225* and have no trouble keeping it there. It might have something to do with your slide door intake. :dont:

Yeah, I definitely have no problem getting air to my fire. I did some chicken legs on it tonight and left the door wide open. It got up to 375 fairly quick before I shut it down and took the legs off.

been Royal Oaking for a while after finding
bags cheap at wallyworld.
no complaints except it can get a bit
dusty and fine-y. they definitely need to
stomp on the bags less.

I tried B&B oak lump for the first time this weekend and I must say I was impressed with the size of the lumps and the smoke flavor. I'll be using it a lot more.

I like cowboy hard lump charcoal. Needs to last very well at comps. I only use my drum for extended cooks (brisket and pork butts.

B&B Hickory is by far my favorite and first choice. I made the mistake of picking up a bag of lump at Sam's. I think Best of the West makes it. It was in a Vision bag. Worst lump I've ever bought! Had 4 pieces that were almost as long as my arm and about fist size in diameter. Also had about 2 inches of dust in the bottom of the bag. Lesson learned.

no hi-jack intended but does lump charcoal burn hotter or longer than regular charcoal briquettes :?:

OUP, lump burns hotter and longer for me. Also makes much less ash.I do use kingsford briquettes just because I bought a boat load when they were on sale.
I like royal oak lump in the red bag best. CF :D
