INSULATING

Postby babyshaq270 » Mon Jan 04, 2016 8:39 am

I am thinking of insulating my UDS with a welding blanket hoping it makes it more efficient is this a good idea ??

Mine doesn't need to be insulated. It already holds steady temps for as long as I need it.

Was recently doing that on my "Good One" smoker, I have a Marshall. I just would fold it over a couple times to cover the firebox, works great. However after a few uses you know know those mornings when the light is just right i noticed thousand or millions of tiny fibers floating all over the place, right into the trailer ect. So decided not to use it anymore, did not want any fiberglass on my bbq or especially if i was serving it to others. Its kinda like dog dander or carpet dust, you really cant see it unless that little ray of light is just right. Good luck whatever you do.

Mines also holds temp but iam thinking of efficiency to get a longer burn time on the charcoal.

You should be getting 12 to 15 hours or even more in some cases out of one load of charcoal depending on your basket capacity. What are you getting now?

I get 24 to 30 hour burns out of mine, but more would be nice. I've thought about building an insulated drum.

Well the longest I have smoked for is 8 hours never had to pass that but from what is left in the basket it could go for longer.

Eight hours is pretty much the norm on a UDS or WSM to finish off a cook unless you are cooking below 250° in this case your burn should be a lot longer.
If you have coals left over after an eight hour cook I guess I am wondering why you are looking for a longer burn?
Just wondering is all. :D

I have cooked in all weather conditions and have always had at least 1/4 coals left over, that includes cooking whole packers and pork butts!! You must have a pretty small basket, I can make you a bigger one!! :D
