My first build

So I've been slowly putting together a plan and am slowly making progress.

New unlined drum from Dallas steel drums.

Worked on a no-weld fire basket when I had a few minutes last weekend. Decided to be really smart instead of using hardware to connect the basket to the grate I used the small precut baling ties...they look pretty bad but seem to be holding solid. Then just a piece of rebar strapped to the top as a handle.

Just testing the fit

I also learned the importance of gloves with expanded steel...

Today was my burn out of the barrel. I went with the weed-burner method as I'm right in the middle of town and was a little nervous about a rip roaring fire and the neighbors.

My wife was a little concerned about my safety...

Interesting view of the rust inhibitor as it burns.

Giving up for the day, tomorrow will be a good cleaning, drilling, and painting. If all works out it may even be all put together by the end of the night. (Probably won't be done until next weekend)

If anyone is still reading, I really appreciate the help from this site with some stupid newbie questions and the huge amount of knowledge in previous posts. Thanks to everyone. Also if you see anything too stupid that I've done, please let me know!

I see them on tapatalk as well. In the past I ran into a tapatalk issue where the photos were too large for desktop use. Tapatalk should give you a sizing option. I usually pick medium.

Nice project you've got going there!

That's probably it, I think I used the large size pics. I'll try uploading them again tonight in a smaller size. Plus I have the first coat of paint on it now!

Sorry for not uploading pics again, been a crazy week, I just got the finishing touches done on my UDS build. Unfortunately the weather is crappy and my wife isn't happy so I won't get my first burn tonight. Hopefully next Sunday after I get back from a hunting trip.

Here it is. Very basic, boring UDS.

Thanks again for all the help with my stupid questions as I was going!

Temp is steady between 217 and 220

Planning on removing at 195 then into a cooler to rest. Any advice or anything I'm missing? Was not planning to foil it.

Came out great, and what could go better with it than Big Red?

Looks good!

Question - what was your cook time and did you have to reload on fuel? Just curious about the UDS.

8lb butt cooked for me in around 13 hours, could've probably even gone longer but I was just trying to stay awake. As for fuel I loaded up my fire basket (almost a full bag of lump mixed with Apple chunks) and still have close to half left.

Cool, the UDS has had my curiosity up for a while.

Thank you

Thanks! The smoker and butt came out so much better than I would've imagined for my first shot at both!
