Donny & Lads UDS build

What’s happening fellas. Started this build a couple weeks ago from an old feed barrel. Took some pics along the way. The wood coal “feeder” / “maintenance” box is fully shielded with high temp barrier on the inside. Same will be done to inner face of the box’s door. Plan on utilizing this feeder box to try to cook/smoke pizzas as well. Looking forward to that.
Coal basket is galvanized pail. Used grinder to get some air inlets. Grinder was far more rapid than drilling holes. Created pinned standoff’s with long bolts and an old galvanized garbage lid as ash catcher under coal basket. Perfect fit inside barrel. If coal basket proves to be too small I will increase size for larger. Wood like to try small first. Although I anticipate I might need more holes/Slices for additional airflow. We’ll see.

Lid and door are being stained and varnished on outside only. Have press for concept and 2/3 split on door for batter access without removing whole door. Also avoided need for drilling an external drum hinge for entire lid. Will have more pics to share as I progress further. Appreciate any insight, thanks.

This looks like an interesting idea, good luck with it, I would just say that you may want to reconsider the galvanized metal, its toxic and if you plan to have high enough temps to cook a pizza it may be hazardous to your health.

Good point. Will see other options instead of galvanized. Thanks

definitely agree with ucsteve, galvanized and fire are bad for your health...
my experience comes from welding so not sure what the temperature is for the hazard, I would not take that chance...
Others on here may know the temperatures that the hazard occurs at? otherwise interested in where this goes looks like a good idea..

Very cool build and really neat ideas. You can go with a 5Gal steel bucket for a fire basket. Just drill holes on the sides. Looking forward to seeing your cooks.

Made a pretty sweet coal basket out of stainless. Worked great. First cook done. Made a bird leg hanger device out of wood. Worded perfect. Chicken legs, 3 hours of smoke
