Re: WeedBurners
We picked up one last weekend! I don't use it to start fires, just to burn my grates so I can brush them off good. I am not a big fan of running a huge piece of steel through a car wash...plus I park mine outside so it gets plenty of water as it is...
I tell you I use lighter fluid, but then everyone would be in an uproar so I will go with propane assist

Re: WeedBurners
My son bought me a Red Dragon Torch set-up for Christmas. He found it on Craigs List for about $50 (tank/Dolly included). Guy he bought from said he couldn't ever light it (he was turning the gas on too high).
I bought him and my son-in-law the same torch (no tank/no dolly) at Harbor Freight for $26. He calls my set up the Ol' Man Version because of the dolly.

I can probably make more money going around starting fires than I can cooking at the comps! Wouldn't really charge anyone -bad karma!

Txbbqman_1 wrote:One word of advice.....and I am not 100% sure how true this is but here goes
I was having trouble with mine at the last cook-off, the same problem I routinely have with mine. It works fine the first couple of times on a fresh bottle and then all of a sudden it's like I am out of propane when I KNOW I am not.
So the guy next to me see's my predicament and wanders over to offer advice, he says the problem I am having is because I have the type of hose that screws into the propane bottle instead of over the top. Seems for some reason these new "Al Gore" valves ( what he called them ) don't like the kind that go inside, and the only real solution is to really really crank it in. So I grab my wrench and I dang near stand on the thing and sure enough it works better, not full blast like I like but still better than nothing.
So I guess my next step is to put a new hose on it with a different connector.
Just thought I would throw that out there for due consideration
Good Luck
I would not go to the fitting that goes that goes over the outside of the valve. You will have three choices if you go that way, Black 72,000 BTU, Green 200,000 BTU, Red 500,000 BTU. Most torches are at least 500,000 BTU and all the fittings that go on the outside of the valve have an excess flow built into them and if you do not follow a simple procedure when turning on your equipment it will "check" and only allow a limited amount of gas to flow. I would recommend that you stay with a POL fitting (one that goes inside) just check to see if you have free flow or an excess flow unit, look into the brass POL fitting and if you see a square restriction it has an excess flow. If you have an excess flow unit follow the procedure below but with torches always buy the free flow POL end model with no restriction to simplify things.
You are correct that there is a back seat that must be opened when inserting the fitting into the valve but by spraying the inside of the cylinder valve with a silicone lubricant only, (if you use a petroleum based lubricate the rubber seat inside the valve may swell and come off making it necessary to replace the valve) it will make it easier to push open with the QCC (outside fitting) or the POL (inside fitting) but with all gas equipment do the three turn method. After connecting turn everything off, open the cylinder and then close once, twice, and on the third time leave it on and you will be ready to go. This will charge the line and allow the excess flow time to balance the system so it will stay open since it is controlled by a spring and a ball that you cannot see.

That is the same one I have... Works great... Thats the same problem I had. You got to turn the gas on real slow or it vapor locks

Yep Jim hit the nail on the head, I tried what he suggested and bingo, no problems. Guess the guy at the cook-off was clueless.
Thanks for the advice Jim...and others who helped

Re: WeedBurners
Went to Northern and bought the 500,000 BTU model. Turned it on and let it run normally for a minute, then I squeezed the handle for the "full blast", and BLAMMO!!!! The hose that connects to the handle came shooting off, and made the loudest bang you have ever heard. I dang near carped my pants, went into that half run/half scared to death pose, and dropped the handle, only to find that the hose on that end never got crimped from the factory.
There is a safety valve built in to shut the propane flow off, which it did, but nothing to help me clean my droors. I took it back to Northern and they replaced it with another......which I verified had both ends crimped. That thing almost gave me a heart attack.
