Digital vs Bi-metal thermometers

Postby Bockbock » Sat Jul 28, 2012 5:05 pm

I am getting ready to purchase some thermometers for my 500 gallon propane tank that is being built. I was reading online that the Bi-metal thermometers aren't very accurate at all. That is all I have ever used on my small smoker. Would the experts suggest digital thermometers which are supposed to be more accurate, or the old fashioned metal thermometers? Want to make sure I get the best meat I can. Maybe I am just to anal, who knows. Let me know your thoughts! Thank ya much.

If you're worried about the inaccuracy of a bi-metallic thermo, the best step upward is a thermocouple with a digital readout. They can actually be calibrated.
Gonna cost a bit though.
That said, most *any* thermo is close enough for Qing!

I run and recommend Tel-Trus to everyone. The quality cannot be beat in my opinion. I do run digital therms on my cooker as well. The door therms give me a close proximity of the grate temps that I can calculate but the digital tells me where the grates are as far as temps at that moment.

I've been mocked by many, but I'm a big fan of the iGrill. Its one thing to have your neighbors drooling at your driveway while q'ing...its another to have them covet your thermometer being displayed on the iPad.

What is the red one? I can't make it out in the picture, I am sure it cost at least $12.44 now!

I use $4 oven therms in my smoker one on each end just to tell me I'm in the ball park of where I want my tuning plates set up. Often times I take them out after that. I don't care for things in my smoker that get in the way of the meat. Especially probes with wires hanging off them.
I packed away the wireless stuff years ago and I think I'm better off for it. I know I saved enough money to fill the freezer with meat by not buying all the latest electronic gadgetry. 8)

I do love my Thermapen though for checking internal temps. Thermoworks makes some quality stuff.
