Freezers: Upright vs. Chest

Postby riseabove50 » Tue Mar 31, 2015 9:03 am

hey folks, I am looking to invest in a garage freezer to hold my meat until an opportune time to smoke. I've had a 5ft. cubic inch top lift chest before and I felt it worked just fine. but i'm also curious what the benefits of a stand-up freezer might be? which is better and/or which do you prefer? for those of you who have experience with both, could you please share your thoughts?

thanks in advance.

I have a stand up, just basically based on taking up less space...

I'm in the market for an upright. I've always felt stuff gets shuffled to the bottom of a chest and forgotten about. However I guess it could just as easily get shuffled to the back of an upright.

15 lb briskets don't jump out of a chest freezer and land on your toes. Only took once and that up right was sold that was 25 yrs ago I've been a Chest man ever since.

We have both. My wife and I both prefer the standup, because things don't get lost/buried in it.

We have both and I prefer the chest type in that it doesn't frost up as bad and is easier to clean/defrost.
While it is true things do settle to the bottom of the chest but because of the frost things get lost to the back of the upright as well.

thanks for the feedback folks. I tool would be worried about my toes with an upright, but I also see the benefits as well.

Lmao BD have had that happen too but still prefer the upright, just easier to see things in there and swap stuff around, front labels makes it easier too.

I've only had uprights. I think chests are more efficient while uprights are easier to access.

I also recommend getting one with an alarm that sounds when temperatures drop. This has saved me thousands in would have been ruined meat when it quits working.

Chest freezers are much more energy efficient because when you open the top all the cold stays there which is also why they are much slower to frost up.

Most stand ups (AFAIK) are frost free which will cause freezer burn and when you open the door ALL the cold air falls on the floor so when you close the door it has to work to get back to temp and that also contributes to freezer burn.

I have a chest that I bought in 2009 and defrosted it for the first time last month. Took me less than an hour

just my opinion

Same here.... just did the de-frost yesterday but only because the stash was low enough (prices are affecting my stock up ability).

On top of that, it seems like my Kenmore freezer didn't actually meet the EnergyStar rating advertised. As long as i fill out a rebate form each year I get a check for excess electricity used. :thap: Ends up being about 10 bucks a year so my freezer's cost is down to about $120.00 and will keep going until they decide to end the program. I always knew that thing was cranking - on setting #1 (out of 6 max.) it still keeps things at 0*.

UPRIGHT and frost free!!!! I've had both and hated the chest because I would have to unload the whole thing to find what I was looking for. Also as previously mentioned, things get buried in the chest freezers that you won't find for years.

I'm in the market for a new upright, myself. I bought one on Craigslist a few years ago for $150 that I loved. When I sold my house, the buyer wanted me to throw in the freezer in the deal. I wasn't going to let a $150 freezer hold me up, so I let it go. I need to find a replacement soon and just need to keep an eye out on craigslist again. The one I bought for $150 was like new.
