For a small pit, that is a great idea for a tuning plate. Only wish I had thought of that, might of had to do some marketing on that one. Looking Good!!!!

Horizon's phone number is 580-336-2400

I live in Perry, OK and they are just down the road from me. I stop in from time to time and get parts for my builds.

Hey Chile,

Just got the tuning plate on the smoker today and doing a big smoke for friends here in Arlington Sunday after the Colonial golf tourney. Looks great, cleaned out the pit and cannot wait to use. Thanks again for the heads up.

Hey Bill.

The tuning plate worked great and I would say the firebox side may have been about the same temp or cooler than the middle of the pit. Hope you have a great Memorial Day !

Is the elbow galvanized? I can't seem to find 3" elbows that aren't galvanized. Might end up at a muffler shop yet.

Dave, the elbow was galvanized. But a bout with the cutting torch and a #10 rosebud took care of the finish. I now just oil it ever now and then. I also saw an aluminum elbow, but thought it might not hold up. The only black ones I could find were too big. Like 5" and 6". CF :D

Does anyone have the sizes and spacings of the holes and the overall length of the Horizon diffuser plate?

I don't have the measurements without going out and taking them. But Horizon might. CF :D

I tried horizon for a firebox and plate and after waiting 3 months, chancelled my order. While I was waiting I tried my 18.5" WSM fire box and it worked like a champ with a couple of bricks under it. I can get a 12 hour burn with one bag of charcoal now and the fire never touches the fire box. Also used silicone to seal the door. With those two mods you don't need a tuning plate as the temp is less than 10 degrees difference across the pit. Also tried the elbow to lower the exhaust closer to the grate and it does work.

Have you guys tried adjusting the temp gauge yet? Mine is set so it reads the temp at the grate. Just get an oven thermometer, when it gets up to temp, pull the gauge, loosen the lock nut, and grab the back of he gauge with pliers, then twist the gauge body until it reads the grate temp.

Do you have some sort of baffle at the firebox to cooking chamber opening or do you still have it completely stock where the top of the opening is just above the grates?
