Bubba Keg $300 - would you?

Postby roaniecowpony » Fri Jun 04, 2010 2:35 pm

Home Depot has knocked the Bubba Kegs down to $300, I assume to clear them out or it could just be the spring/summer sale.

I looked at one. At their previous price of $450, I passed. How about $300? What do you guys think about them at that price?

if the BK was $300 and easy to find i'd have picked one up over my egg.

as I understand it the egg is better, but it can't be 600 better (600 after all the stuff I added to my egg that comes with the BK)

I agree that a ceramic egg is undoubted the better grill/smoker. The BK may have hi-tech insulation or not, dunno. With good insulation, it could perform as well as an egg or close enough. But, the plain steel construction will limit the life, at least where I live, near the coast. Still, $300 sounds pretty cheap.

Your are so right about that.

I think he could cook on an engine block or tailpipe and make some nice stuff. 8)

Well....I bought one. 'Went to HomeD and they had one, the floor model. They mentioned that they were backordered and the floormodel had somthing missing. They got a clerk and we looked it over. I couldn't figure out what might be missing. No box, no instructions, but all the obvious parts look like they're there. The clerk said they usually knock of 10% for floormodels with parts missing. I said if I had to buy or make something, 10% ($30) was not enough off and I'd buy it if they went 20% ($60) off. They did. $239 total.

I'll check the BK website for what's missing.

Ok, it's only the "multi-tool" which is a grate remover and an ash rake/fire stoker. The hitch and all the other parts are there. And no assembly by me required either. :ddollar:

Went to Costco and bought a couple Boston Butts. I may be able to jury rig my new Stoker up on the new Bubba. I'm gonna check it out now.

I could use some advice on how to get a long burn. I have a few bags of Royal Oak, chunk applewood.

You'll want to go with lump. Regular charcoal will produce too much ash for a long cook.

I made a plate to go in the track of the flue and my Stoker fan is installed.

I got a lotta new stuff here and have to read up before I start.

Without a coal basket, can I build a small pyrimid of unlit coals with some chunk wood interspersed and just put a few lit coals on top? Then let the Stoker do it's thing?

No idea what you mean by a coal basket. The grate you can see in the overhead pic is the bottom of your firebox. Load of the firebox with some LUMP, mix in some chips or chunks of wood, light it (using whatever method you prefer), wait about 30 minutes for the bad smoke to go away and load that bad boy up. Don't even think about briquets.

good deal for sure.

I mounted mine on a comp trailer, I'd be much more comfortable with the BK, but I'm not getting rid of the egg, and don't need 2
