The first post in this thread has links to BBQ associations in Tx. They have an event calendar you can look at.

Hi everyone. We were just added to the Calendar for Texas Gulf Coast Cookers BBQ and just wanted to tell you about our cookoff!!!

The 2014 Toyota Texas Bass Classic Cook Off is happening May 10th, 2014 at Lake Fork near Quitman, TX, located to the east of Dallas. It is a 50 team, Texas Gulf Coast BBQ Cookers Association sanctioned event with $10,000 in prizes. There are three categories for the cook-off, Chicken, Ribs, and Beef Brisket, and 1st place in each wins $1,500.

Toyota Texas Bass Classic is a three day family festival, featuring the top 50 anglers in the world and country concerts each night with some of country music’s biggest stars.

Below is the link to the Toyota Texas Bass Classic BBQ Cook-off website, where you can find links for the entry forms and rules!!

I’m curious if anyone is interested in competing in non-sanctioned events? Maybe for beginners like myself and to get me feet wet first??? Also is there a bbq calendar for such an event?

There are plenty of non sanctioned events, but what you will run into is that, since they are not sanctioned, there isnt a central listing. Check locally for small events. Typically, though not always, you can find charity cook offs or some county Fairs that are not sanctioned. Worst case, get 5 or 6 of your buddies and compete against each other!

Alternatively, some of the sanctioned events have a back yard division intended for amateurs. Still stiff competition, but a way to get your feet wet.

Lastly, if you're not quite there yet, see if you can find a team and volunteer to help. Expect to work, as its not a free ride, but it will help you yet introduced to the game.

I suggest that you may want to go to a sanctioned event and volunteer to judge that will give you a good Idea of how things work and what yo look for in comp BBQ.
