I'm planning on lining the bottom and sides (in the fire box area, maybe two high) of my smoker. I know others use them but I saw a health warning on them when I went to purchase then.... Are there different types? Also going to put a dusting of sand down to keep the grease from building up on the blocks

I lined the fire box with Fire Bricks in my Cement Block smoker some 30 years ago.

Every BBQ site that I googled said it was OK to use Fire Bricks in your Pits, especially if they are used to maintain and keep heat and not as a baking or cooking surface.

If you are doing it for insulation and efficiency purposes you are insulating the coolest part of your firebox. The hottest is the upper sides and top. Personally I feel you would be adding extra weight for very little return.

With the heating element im adding I dont want to be heating the metal below it.
