Cookin Without Fire

Postby Boots » Sun Jul 22, 2018 5:13 pm

Man, up here in McKinney it’s HOT. It's Egypt during the Plagues Save-Us-Moses hot. The Thermopen does not lie, 109 degrees. One degree above Phoenix, only 4 below Death Valley.

Yes Sir, it's fying egg on the sidewalk temps here also. That's why I was doing roundy rounds on the Riding Mower this morning at 7am. I'm sure that "some" of my neighbors weren't all that excited but they'll just have to get over it.

Sweltering in the Pines. I ran out at 7:30 and gave the horses a bath, filled up the corn feeder, and picked up a big sweet gum limb that had broke off; by 8:20 it looked like you had turned the water hose on me. just got out of a luke warm shower and feeling better.

Yep, we have been keeping a close eye on 'Ol Tunder ourselves, but he seems to thrive in the heat even though he has bleached out considerably as he does every summer. He and Don Quixote are going through about a half a trough of water a day but still working every green blade in the pasture.

I don't know how you guys do it , I start getting irritable about 95 degrees.
We had a week of 100-102 a few weeks back and I was on the verge of hopping in the freezer ....

It is relative indeed, we struggle with the cold. A former neighbor, a relo from Michigan who had just arrived in the Promised Land (Texas), once laughed at me in November for wearing a sweater while I was out stoking my Klose kooker, and he was out walking in his shorts and a Wolverine shirt and flip flops. Went on and on about how Texans were "wimpy" about cold weather. I went along and nicely said, "You know you are right, but we'll see how you do come August and it's 105 here".

His eyes popped out; blankly he then said, "104? WHAT? The realtor said it rarely got much above 90 here!?!". I suggested he hire a different realtor next time. He stomped off, shaking his head.

Poor dude; the very next summer was 2011. I never did see him out of his house again, thought I was often out in my shorts in summer and my sweater in the winner, stoking my Klose kooker, hoping he had not pitched down face down somewhere, dead of heat stroke.

Normally (I said normally) it really bothers the ones that don't get acclimated as the Seasons are changing. When I was a Farrier, I worked year round outside, rarely in a barn because they were the hottest place usually. If I was to expose myself to that today, it would be toes up for me by Noon. :whiteflag:
