Is it worth trying to fix?

Postby JohnTBucket » Thu Oct 24, 2019 1:20 pm

Been wanting to get a smoker for a while now, and saw this one being given away for free. Pretty rusted when I first looked at it. But once I took it home and began to clean it up it was a whole lot worst than I thought.

Is it worth trying to fix? I was thinking I could get some thing to patch it up with maybe some aluminum sheets and use some nontoxic baking clay to seal the gaps. That or just buy a whole new bottom for $60.

There is a member here that goes by KAM. You might find a post in the pit forum he replied on and send him a private message

Thanks y’all and for the warm welcome! I’ll look for K.A.M and see what he think.

As for capabilities I don’t have a welder nor the knowledge so won’t be able to do anything like that.

Getting KAM's opinion on this is a very good idea regardless of what you decide, however, after seeing your "capabilities" reply, I'm thinking that fixing this one may not be the best idea for "you".

I think you'd be better off starting with a clean 55gal drum and make a drum smoker. Drums can be bought new for pretty cheap and can be found free. But be sure you know what was in the drum before you use it for a smoker. There are plenty of plans online for drum smokers. Even with purchasing a new drum, I think you can keep it under $200 and probably closer to 100.
