Hi folks! So my rig is in my signature (I hope). If not, smoker is Old Country BBQ Pits Wrangler. The question are following. My typical process flow is chimney of lump oak, then pecan splits the rest. Fire box damper typical operation and stack wide open.
Charcoal basket or not?
Painting the fire box tray; or what can I do to save it?
Ideas for an ash pan in the firebox?

Re: 2 questions
Big Welcome, I do the same procedure to start my offset. I personally would not use a basket because I am only adding splits if pecan. I would not paint anything in the firebox. If you are looking to extend the life of your firebox try adding a formed or rolled I/4 inch piece of metal on the bottom of box.
How bout some more beans Mr.Taggert? I'd say you've had enough!

Yes if possible.

No paint in the cooker or firebox. Clean out your firebox as soon as it is cool and you will prolong its life. Replacing basket bottoms is common due to the heat but on smaller cookers that run small fires it isnt too often.
Ideas for an ash pan in the firebox?
Ash pans are awesome for easy clean out. You can use a thin piece of sheet metal (Not treated) bent to fit the bottom.
