Weber Kettle 12 Hrs.@ 250º "NO TOUCH" MOD.

Postby BluDawg » Sun Sep 06, 2009 11:15 pm

I have been wanting to build a UDS for awhile.I am putting the final touches on my build plans and have been looking at coal baskets when I got an idea that was simply to easy, I had to try it. What I came up with is an inside out coal basket for my Weber kettle.
I cut a piece of expanded metal 4" X 45" brought the ends together and bolted them so I ended up with a 4" tall hoop 15" in dia. I put it on the coal grill and put a mix of lump and brick with some fist sized pecan around the outside of the hoop leaving about 3" unfilled.
Image

I lit about 8 pieces of lump in the chimney starter about 2" square and placed them at one end. Opened the intake w/o and place the lid on with my themo probe on the grill.the temp came up to 213 deg in 10 min. I closed the intake to 1/3 open and it rose to 254 deg and settled in at 250 deg with a 3 deg drift up and down.
ImageImage

After 4 1/2 hrs I had to look. Much to my amazement only about 6" of fuel had been used. The photos prove this if you look at the position of the fire in relation to the handle on the right side of the pic.* {the first pic was shot from the opposite side.}
Image

After 12 hrs the Butt finally hit 204 deg. I was at the end of the coals. I'm still in denial I didn't touch anything all day. But I have fallen In love with my Weber kettle all over again. I tell y'all this thing is a "BBQ Machine"! heres the Butt ready to be foiled and head for the cooler.

Since I'm not in Texas, any idea where outside of I could find a strip of expanded metal 5"X45"? (muffler shop, machine shop?) I'm up for trying this out!

Dats, you can try a recycling facility they usually have some laying around and fairly cheap too.

It turns out that one my neighbors is a machinist.... I've left a message on his machine. The recycle yards around here are all about used windows and left over tile and pieces of drywall.

You mean there are no Metal recycling yards close to ya, the ones that buy alum cans and steel items. I guess its not a big ticket item whre your located, but any larger town will have at least one or two. Well hopefully he will have what your looking for.
