OT What welder to buy

Postby Wtxsmoker » Tue Nov 15, 2011 7:20 am

Welder question
I am going to build a new competion trailer pit. I have a 220 amp stick welder and small 110 140 mig. I am thinking on getting a new 220 amp mig set up. I think a Hobart 190 with the spool gun for alum.. is good enough for 1/4 welding and priced right at less 1K
What do some of you use.

Millermatic 210 is my favorite welder that I have for around the house. I believe they are by far the BEST VALUE out there. I guess they have been replaced with the 212. I had a hobart ( 180 I think  ) Welded well, but I was always waiting on it to cool off.

Thanks guys.

I'm a fan of The blue stuff so I think I'm gonna get a miller 211 just small amount more but does not have the spool gun. Rated darn close to the 212 I never do aluminum anyway.

Gonna replace my my current 6'x24 single cook rack comp cooker with a double shelf cooker just to hold a little more Q. Hope to get back to comp cooking again after 7 year lay off. Cooking Lonesar cook offs

Ive got a miller 212 mig and a miller bobcat. Mig welds vary alot depending on the gas.I use 98/2 . argon o/2 mix. Runs hot but you can turn it down. I think the extra heat might be beneficial to a 110 welder.

I was a stick welder only until recently. I purchased a Lincoln 110V mig and could not get it to do what I wanted, just me I am sure but I had about given up on using a mig until I was gifted, so to speak, a Miller 251. Pure heaven welding with this rig. :)

True blue:
I know that Hobart and Miller are owned by the same company and exchange several parts.
Miller and the Hobart is basicly the same in the transformer area but plastic spool feed and some other parts. But my study between a hobart 190 220V only and the Hobart 210 110 and 220V switch hitter seem about the same except the HH190 is 220V only.
The Miller 211 is a 110 and 220V welder it seems the miller just hits harder on the thicker 1/4 stuff with better feed time and gas use. The 110 settings are about equal to a 140 amp 110 which is very capable of 16 gauge up to 1/8 in a single pass.
Just trust a Miller... its blue

Hey, don't forget- it's getting near the end of the year. If your local welding supply shop is anything like the one near me, they have nearly new rental units they sell off cheaper so they can put the latest models in service. Might be able to save a few bucks. Stephen

Hobart 190 is what I'm running on my build! By far, better than a lincoln! Picked mine up from tractorsupply on sale back in the sping, I am really enjoying it!

It's recommended to do a second pass. when I welded up my firebox, using 1/4" plate, I put a wide bead on it with on pass.

Men I picked up a Miller 211 todya for 999.00 and got a 11 pound spool throwin from my local Airmerigas / Miller dealer. Set up took maybe twenty minutes then weld up a 1/8th inch thick 1x1 strap charcoal basket for my patio smoker. Darn near burned throught with it set up for 110. Sweet rig
I'm smiling. Now on to the trailer build

I have had a Canadian Miller .... Hobart 185 which is a 220. I don't weld all the time, but when I do I weld with Hobart. 8)
