I really enjoyed the last cook off we did in Cleveland but have a Cub Scout commitment for that Sat Morning.

We're planning on cooking this one. Been trying to stay out of the Texas heat, but I've got that itch.

I have been tinkering with the idea of entering a cookoff and since I live in Porter, this one is pretty close. Should I go and volunteer judge this one first or jump in feet first? I really want to to the one in Porter in September, so I don't know which experience would be most helpful.

Jump in now as practice for Porter. My team, we were better organized and prepped after getting our first cook under our belts. Next cook, we trimmed out our dead weight which reduced our gear by probably 30% and got us better focused and coordinated. And best if all, it's just flat fun.

The water's great, dive on in...

i agree with boots but will throw in that volunteering as a judge would hopefully help you figure out how to cook your meats to fit what the judges are looking for...i skipped the volunteering aspect of it and we are still feeling around in the dark to figure out what they want...to us they seem to have no taste buds at all LOL....boots is also correct because we're going into our third cook-off and are still figuring out what to bring, what's fluff and how to get everything there.

Honestly I think it's important to do both. You have to compete for the experience of it but it's also important to know what people are turning in and what's scoring well. Are there other comps you can help judge before you compete in your 1st one? You could also pass around samples to other competitors you meet and ask for honest opinions. Hopefully they will return the gesture and you get to see what they turn in and how they do. I've done 3 comps and another that was just ribs. However, I'm still trying to figure out whats winning consistently. IMO it varies on where you compete and what judges show up. Until I zero in on what I want to turn in, I plan on being a volunteer judge every now and then.

well just called and reserved our spot for this cook-off, so We're definately in. The lady in charge says she has room for at least 200 teams, and is nowhere near full so yall c'mon out and help support the Military Assistance Program....and Scott P if you're interested, you're more than welcome to come hang out with our team for this cook-off. We're not pros at this yet by any means (this will be our 3rd competition)...but you'll be able to get an idea of how it all goes down.

This one is tempting ... a little bit of a drive from where I'm at but I'm actually considering.
