My proof of concept version 1
The other day I posted about making an oven on top of the firebox so I could cook a pie or something while I smoke stuff. We have lots of scrap metal at work so I figured I would put together a box and try this before I went to welding on the smoker.
This is the flat surface on the top of the smoker that is sending usefull BTUs out into space that I want to capture for the good of smokerdom. the surface is about 16X12
one day Ill figure out how to rotate my photos on here.

Re: My proof of concept version 1
should it work out ok Ill build the real box out of steel and make a door that opens to the front of the grill. If it doesnt work out it goes to the recycler.

First mod to the box. the kids asked how do you know its hot enough to bake the cobler? So I put a hole in the lid and used the safety wire to hole a meat thermomiter up over the center of what will be cooking.
Tomorrow we try it out.

I had to put a towel around it to retain the heat. The demo one is aluminum and it pulls out too much heat.
My phone was low so ill have to post a final shot when its back up.

I think for doing baked potatoes this will do good but for cobbler I don't think I'll bother anymore.

Ill try a couple of more things in it Im trying apple pie next. I do think if it was a thick steel it would hold heat better though. If I go to the trouble of making a steel box im going to cut the fire box i now have off and make a larger one so I can put a chunk of wood in thats over 10 inches long. But my pit will have one on it if I build the pit or have one made.
