I'm arranging my 39th birthday party at our house in two weeks. Theme of this party will be Texas, as I'll be serving slowly smoked bbq ribs, cowboy potatos, some grilled "roadside chicken", hot bbq beans, coleslaw etc. Of course loads of beer for everyone, maybe some tequila as well. After that we play some poker, Texas Holdem. We do small home tournaments quite regularly.
I never visited Texas, only been to Illinois in US and I'd love to add some Texas touch for the party. How? With food, drinks, decoration? Music will be southern blues or rock .. maybe even some outlaw country?
How's Texas?

Sterno,
Its hot.
Im sure you will get many good responses here...describing Texas may be a bit difficult. But perhaps we can come up with a few ideas for your party.
First off - we would most likely be having BBQ brisket (although ribs rate high on my scale) sauage is a staple too + Pinto beans, Potato salad and Cole Slaw. Throw on some sweet-iced tea and white bread along with sliced onions, pickles and pickled (anything) jalapenos. I personally like (my) BBQ sauce and lots of it. Afterwards a good cobbler would top off the meal.
Eat outside.
Maybe you could show the movie Lonesome Dove on the TV to get the Texas feelings going.
Check out this Dallas Radio station - http://www.kzps.com/main.html for an assortment of Lone Star music - maybe you can play this during the party.
Start a fight with a family member. JUST KIDDING.
I hope that helps.

Awesome information, thanks!! For sure we eat outside - I do nearly every dinner, now in the summer anyway!
I'll try to get some of those red and white checkered tablecloths and I'll start to look into those grubs!

Might mention a few things. Texas potato salad is served cold and made with mustard if you don't have a recipe we'll fix ya up. The sausage here is descended from German immigrants so you shouldn't have much trouble with that cept you might slip some jalapeños in. I can send you a recipe for a Texas style BBQ sauce but if you are in West Texas you probably won't use any if you wander over to eastern Texas then it's OK. The BBQ meat is served on butcher paper and eating it with your hands is perfectly proper. The traditional BBQ meats are not overly spiced.
