Uss Gerald Ford visiting Oslo

Postby Norway Joe » Wed May 24, 2023 3:22 am

Pretty cool to follow the approach of USS Gerald Ford to Oslo. Almost 5000 sailors will be visible downtown.

Picture below is when the ship passes the fortress Oscarsborg with its history. It's in the narrow part just north of Drøbak in the map picture

We are very happy to welcome the ship and sailors here. This is the ships first deployment and Oslo its her first harbor.

The Ford had to give way to the ferry from Denmark. The ferry helds 22 knots through the fjord. Gerald Ford went around 14 knots. Would be opposite of course in open water.

A lot of history in this OUP.
aircraft carrier, naval vessel from which airplanes may take off and on which they may land. As early as November 1910, an American civilian pilot, Eugene Ely, flew a plane off a specially built platform on the deck of the U.S. cruiser Birmingham at Hampton Roads, Virginia. On January 18, 1911, in San Francisco Bay, Ely landed on a platform built on the quarterdeck of the battleship Pennsylvania, using wires attached to sandbags on the platform as arresting gear; he then took off from the same ship.
The Langley was our first true carrier.

The British Navy also dabbled in this early on.
The British navy also experimented with the carrier; during World War I it developed the first true carrier with an unobstructed flight deck, the HMS Argus, built on a converted merchant-ship hull. The war ended before the Argus could be put into action, but the U.S. and Japanese navies quickly followed the British example. The first U.S. carrier, a converted collier renamed the USS Langley, joined the fleet in March 1922. A Japanese carrier, the Hosyo, which entered service in December 1922, was the first carrier designed as such from the keel up.

Thanks K.A.M. Very interesting.

Actually also historical undertones when the Gerald Ford passed the fortress. The fortress sunk the Germans biggest warship Blucher when they attacked Norway during WWII. The Gerald Ford passed over the wreckage on her way to Oslo.

I posted a few pictures from the fortress here couple of weeks ago when we were there with our boat.

The visit of Gerald Ford also sends an important signal in today's environment. Our long coast along the north Atlantic is just as vital today as it was to the Germans during the WWII. Those who control this coastline controls the north Atlantic.

The ship is an impressive sight with its 333 meters and all the fighter jets on the deck.

Was out with the boat today and watched the USS Gerald Ford leaving Oslo. Oldest son got some cool photos.

Guess it's OK to show some respect for the sailors on the memorial day.
