A gross question

Postby nascarchuck » Tue Jun 26, 2007 10:20 am

OK, I know this is gross, but I have a question.

My sis-in-law bought a duplex and I am helping her clean it out. The guy that was living there wasn't evicted, but he knew that it was on the way. When he left, he just took the clothes on his back from the looks of it. The place was pretty nasty.

Now for the question...

The oven smells of urine when it is turned on. We have used heavy duty Easy Off twice, but the smell is still there.

Any ideas on getting the urine smell out of the oven???

Ohhhh... The messes I get myself into!

Seems to me the stuff may have seeped out of the oven and into the cabinet.

Personally, I'd look in the phone book for folks who specialize in clean-up of "special" messes and ask them for tips. They may have an enzymatic cleaner you could buy or you may have to let them do the clean-up. In this case, with food and urine involved, I'd let them clean the oven.

Bet the guy had a dog that peaved on the cabinet net to the range. When the oven heats up..... .

Pull the range out and check to see if the cabinets are stained. Kilz might do the trick. If it is the range....get a new one. Since it's a rental property, your sis can write it off.

If it turns out to be urine on the cabinets, try soaking them with Kids N Pets. You can order it online from Amazon or buy it in the carpet cleaning section at Walmart. This stuff is awesome!! I swear by it. I've removed urine odor from a mattress (son wet the bed), blueberry cobbler from a brand new white t-shirt, spaghetti sauce from sand colored carpet, and more. You can use it on most any surfaces but you have to go heavy so it soaks into the fibers of carpet or woods. It is an enzymatic cleaning product.

I'm not sure about drywall since it is a liquid and it's not good to get drywall wet.

Here's their website:

www.kidsnpetsbrand.com

It tells a bit more about how to use it and other info, like where to get it.

I did see this on the website:
"KIDS 'N' PETS is safe for use on any water-safe surface. Always use KIDS 'N' PETS full strength."

this doesnt go with the thread. I am sorry to hear you have to deal with that nascar. BUT, It is some what a relief to know that I am not the only one that ends up in an odd ball situation like that. Some I allways get the call to come help a friend with something like that.

Is it a self cleaning oven? That extra high heat may burn off any residue. :dont: I like DATs idea the best. :D

Hmmmm, I say visit a scratch and dent store and get a new oven? :? While the old oven is gone, get the stuff Allie recommended and scrub the cabinets.

You would be more help if you replaced the oven and cleaned around it!!!

Obviously, she is trying to avoid buying a new oven. She is just getting started in the rental game and is still on a tight budget (my pay from the weekends worth of work reflects that!!!).

I will throw y'alls ideas at her and see what she wants to do.

Tuff call, but if the kitchen smells like urine---can't rent the unit. Pull it and go to Lowe's or Home Depot, get another. Log it as an expense and move on. Good Luck, hope everything turns out OK!

I see a lot look like pretty good shape off craigs list if she doesn't want to buy a brand new one.
