First day on the water

Postby Norway Joe » Thu May 13, 2021 7:29 am

Finally. Got the boat on the water on Monday. But we've had only 40 f. And rain for a long time. Today it's 68f and sunny and no wind. Feels like we're going to melt :laughing7:

Thanks. We are blessed with a very boat friendly coast. Lots of small islands and islets to cruise between.

We have the boat at the circle I have drawn. It's close to downtown Oslo. We can go all the way out the fjord before we are out on the open ocean. Or continue along the coast mostly protected by islands.Image

How active is the Brackish Water vs Saltwater in those inlets where you dock :?: :dont:

What do you mean with how active is the brackish water?

It's saltwater all the way in. That is due to the tidal water so the water is shifting. Can be pretty strong currents at the narrowest points. Up to 5 knots.

You answered my "poorly stated question" just fine. I was comparing the inlets and cuts to south Louisiana not realizing Y'alls tidal movement. Does that Tide cause you storage and docking problems more than most :?:

Depending on the time of the year the difference between low tide and high tide can be about a yard. Don't cause any problems but you have to be aware of rocks that is visible at low tide but just under the surface at high tide. You need to keep an eye on plotter.

As I said the current can be strong when the tidal flow is at its most.

Check the spot I've circled. Imagine all the water that goes in and out through the narrow sound during tidal flow.

Further north the difference is much bigger. Up to two yards. We have a famous place called "saltstraumen" which is the world's strongest tidal current. Big maelstroms forms in the water that can suck down boats. There are companies that takes you out in the current with ribs.

A couple of photos of the Saltstraumen further north.

The guy in the second picture was rescued. He got an engine failure and his boat was about to be sucked down. Remember this is caused by tidal current. Not bad weather or waves.

It's a great diving spot but you have to be aware of the times of the tidal flow or you are doomed. It's completely calm for a period before the tidal flow shifts.ImageImage

WOW, I think that's what they call "undertow" down on the inlets along the Gulf Coast "but on a much much smaller scale" - - - I used to wade fish a lot and we really had to be careful about the undertow when wading the incoming and outgoing channels on the Gulf waters.

Thanks for the pics and info - - -I was very informed to say the least. :whiteflag:
