Cinder Block Open Pit

Postby milton1allen » Mon Jun 28, 2021 3:50 pm

Does anyone cook on a Cinder Block Open pit using coals underneath the food? I am working on building a 4' x 4' pit now and wanted to see if anyone has any tips or advise on cooking this way? I will probably cook Leg Quarters on it first since they will be a cheaper mess up if I don't do it right! I still need a 55 gallon barrel to build my fire in to make coals. I think I will enjoy this type of cooking since it is completely primitive. Give me your thoughts about cooking this way.

Not a common pit on this site but I think some have built or experimented with one at some point in life. Lots of old school barbecue joints actually still use these. Aaron Franklin has an interesting video on building a temporary to smoke a pig BTW.

Bobby: "No."
Hank: "Well, there's really no wrong way to do it."
