A little fall garden harvest

Postby Rambo » Fri Oct 22, 2021 8:51 am

I didn’t want to hi Jack Chasdev’s bean thread so thought I’d put this up; I’m still making peppers out the Kazoo and have a few fall squash, 2 short rows of Pintos, and some Lettuce in the grow boxes. Lettuce is very easy to grow, even for those of you that don’t have acreage: you can put in in the flower beds or in pots. Lowe’s and Home Depot have some, we like the Leaf Lettuce and the cold doesn’t bother it. It tastes much better than the store lettuce

It’s hard to see but if you can blow that cayenne photo up there are hundreds of peppers on those plants

I just want to emphasize to everyone how easy and good this lettuce is: I’m not a big salad eater but my wife is. Once this stuff gets going you DON’t pull up the WHOLE plant; just go out there with a pair of scissors and cut off what you want for that meal. It just keeps reproducing new leafs forever. You can buy a six pack of them for 4 bucks and have fresh lettuce until it gets hot again

Beautiful! They look so good.

And now I'm jealous. We can't grow lettuce except in the coldest months. It immediately gets bug-eaten, worse than any ofther plants.

Just put a little Sevin dust on it and on the dirt around it; rinse thoroughly before eating. I know everyone is “ Anti bug Killer “ nowadays but we’ve been using it for 50 years and we’re not dead

It’s a staple in the south. I can’t grow a garden without Sevin Dust. They also have a spray now

You can also wet spray bacillus thuringinisus (sp) a natural bacteria that bores into tomato worms and green loopers and kills em dead. Found it very effective and you can wash and eat the produce same day. Markets under the name Thuricide BT.

Remember my dad would mix up 30% Sevin in his tractor wet sprayer and spray the St Augustine in the yard. Next day, dead grub worms all over the yard. Grass got gorgeous and stayed that way several years. Very effective.
