It appears that I was mistaken about that Crepe Mertle.
Upon further inspection a beaver had plans for it! :mrgreen:

Do you have a Creek nearby?

No, I don't. The "canal" is a holding area between with an overflow to a larger detention pond. All part of stormwater control and release.
