Family Pickin and Grinnin

Postby OldUsedParts » Wed Mar 15, 2023 9:48 am

Most everyone in my Family, cept a few, are musicians/singers of some kind and my 2 Sons are no exception - - - both of them are good musicians and they also are good craftsmen at building and repairing things made from wood. My oldest Son has been making Cigar Box Guitars for a couple of years now and has gotten real good at it. Not too long ago my youngest Son was given several very very old string instruments that he is rebuilding. He is also a mandolin player and a "professional Bass Guitar Player".

I've said all of that to say this: Every now and then we get together at my House for a picking and grinnin (we call it). The last time I had them bring a lot of instruments even tho we basically used a Cigar Box (oldest son), a Mandolin (youngest son) and I switched from Keyboard, Bass and Blues Harp, depending on the song. We've all played Professionally but this is a Family thing and we're mainly playing some Bluegrass Gospel and Classic Country lately.

In spite of my Camera (yuck) here are some pitiful pics.

Oops, I forgot to mention the Ukulele which 'rarely' gets played for some reason??? "My Dog Has Fleas" :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:

Also forgot to mention that back in January my Oldest son and his Step-Son when to the New Orleans Cigar Box Guitar Festival and had a ball. There was a Contest that you could enter one of your Cigar Box Builds and he entered the one that he is holding up. It has "Tigger" on the Face that was painted there by his Step Grand Daughter. Didn't win anything but received lots of thumbs up and comments. :laughing7:

Its an old time string band! Handsome work by yer boys. Bought my son his first back during Covid. He continues to improve - like golf, you can always improve but still have room to get better.

Yessir. Was actually pretty well priced and according to him, pretty good quality. He did replace the pick ups with better. I couldn’t find one with a Texas flag, but got the next best! They also made it with the union jack in keeping with the rock ‘n’ roll world.

There are some out there but they are Pricey - - - there's also skins for them but I don't that it would be the right way - - - I'd think that Painting it on would be the best way. ?New Pickups? sounds like he's into proper sound and that's great? My oldest son that builds the Cigar Box Geetars is always talking about putting humbuckers or pre-amps on something :laughing7: :laughing7:
