Stuck digging holes... HELP!

Postby nascarchuck » Sat Mar 17, 2007 3:41 pm

I rented an auger today to dig some holes to put up fence posts.

I have a couple of holes that aren't wanting to cooperate. I am getting down about 6-10 inches and is stops digging. It looks like I am hitting dark clay. Looking into the holes, it looks like plastic or rubber.

I'm stuck and need to get these holes done by tomorrow.

Any suggestions? I am going to my F-I-L's and borrowing his rock bar and sharp shooter to see if that will help any. I have already tried a manual labor post hole digger and it ain't cutting through the clay.

that clay is all over up here, can't imagine an auger not drillin past that stuff. I've never had to dig holes that deep. Maybe a bigger auger would do the trick...Good luck

Now thats service!

I bet that it wasn't 5 minutes gone by for a reply!

I think that is the only size auger they have.

I called the rental place and they told me to try the rock bar. If they had a larger one, I would imagine that they would had offered it to me, for more money of course!

Hello Chuck, I know whatcha mean about trying to dig post holes! My problem is that I live on a mountaintop of solid limestone! I can only dig about 6-9 inches deep before I hit solid rock!! If you will go get you some Bentonite, I think it is called, spread some on the ground & in the post holes you got started & water it in & let it set awhile & then try to dig it out, it will soften it up some for ya!
God loves you & so do I, in the precious name of Jesus

They are all empty now!

Finally got them all dug. Two had some rock in them and I had about 5 that just have me a hard time because of clay. The clay didn;t look dry. I think that it was just real "gummy" beacuse it was moist. Anyway, I use the rockbar and tore up the clay the best that I could, then I used the auger. After I would do that 6 or 7 times, the aguer would finally get ahold and dig...

Ended up getting 4 posts set last night. I went to Lowes and Home Depot and both are out of the clamps (brackets) that I need! :x But the 4 posts that are done are the ones that I wanted done first as they are on the gate side of the fron of the fence, so that worked out ok.

Ohhhh... My aching back!

Hey TL... Where might one buy that Bentonite? Is it a Home Depot type item?
