Been thinking the same thing. Meat prices are what they are. It’s the charcoal that’s getting me. Has literally doubled in price over the last 18-24 months around here. I use to catch it around Memorial Day, double 18# bags for $10. Nowadays that same bundle is $20. But as they say, you gotta pay to play.

Where are you Meat. It’s gone up here but I can still catch brisket for $2.49-2.99 if I shop the ads. The last pork I bought was.99 Lb. I watch the weekly ads, especially HEB and when I see a bargain I get it and in the freezer it goes. I don’t use much charcoal GTR so haven’t even noticed that. Like you, I usually buy a bunch when Lowe’s or Home Depot run that special you’re talking about

Debbie picked these two up the other day. Our HEB is running 4.49 lb. on prime.
These are for comps and will get super trimmed to about 4 to 5 lbs.

I don't know what you're used to but we pay USD 17.6/lb for brisket. Babybacks are 11.6/lb.

Where we live pork is way less $$$ than beef. Baby backs or spares, typically $3-$5 a pound, not on sale. Brisket? Eight bucks if you're lucky. The cows have to walk here all the way from Texas.

WOW...that's a lot to pay for meat.
You guys ever BBQ whale?

As for me, I was born in Houston and left when I was around 25.
Have now lived in California for the last 32 years but try to go back
from time to time to visit family, eat BBQ and TexMex.
In fact, about 12 years ago I had a BBQ pit shipped out from Houston.
Now at least I can smoke or BBQ with some creditability.
But these darn meat prices are killing me.
Might have to go back to eating salads

I did try to grill whale steaks a couple of years ago. We can get whale meat in most supermarkets. I hadn't eaten it for many years. Not since I was a kid. All I remember from that is that it tasted fish oil. By the way, fish oil is healthy and we usually take a table spoon of it every morning.

The steak didn't taste as good as people said it would so I only did it once.

I have a thread from it here in the forum with more details. Search for whale steak.

Here are a few photos of the meal.

I haven't been brisket pricing in a while but back shortly after the start of Covid, social distancing, and masks I was in my local meat market to buy a couple of steaks when I went past the area where they have ribs and briskets. They had a ~13lb brisket for over $13 lb. Ugliest brisket I've ever seen to boot. It's better here now than it was but still overpriced the last I looked.
