Anybody doing anything unusual for Thanksgiving?

Postby EdG » Sat Nov 19, 2022 6:26 pm

Hi guys-
My nephew is supposingly going to deliver a home reared turkey for us but he’s a bit unreliable so I’m imagining alternatives so I won’t get stuck.
Thinking about smoking a duck on the Oklahoma Joes with a side of teriyaki baby potatoes, maybe some stuffed mushrooms. Asian influenced but not full on if ya get me.
Anybody else going outside the box this year?

Wishing you all a great Thanksgiving

Smoke on!

No, it’s gonna be pretty standard for us.

My wife did almost buy a turducken though!

What's a corn casserole?

My wife makes that but I think it’s cream corn, whole kernel corn, Jiffy Muffin mix, sour cream, butter, and grated cheese mixed together and baked. You should be able to find some recipes online. I like Paula Deen for this kind of cooking

We haven't been "Traditional" in several years, so I haven't done a Turkey in a long time, HOWEVER, we'll be going to one of the Wiffy's Son's in South Houston. I'm fixing homemade Queso Dip and the Wiffy is fixing Coke Salad that her Son's love so much. Our D.I.L. is Chinese and we look forward to her Cooking, especially with her Mom helping her. YUM YUM
Might say we're having Asian, Dixie, Hispanic GRUB  :chef:

I grew up North on 59 in Cleveland and always commuted but as a teen my reasons for going to Houston weren't honorable to say the least :whiteflag:

Unusual for me, decided today.
I’m gonna quarter my whole bird before smoking it.
I was just gonna do the whole bird in the oven, and my breasts on the Silverbac.
Now they’re all going on the pooper.

I hesitate to air dry it for 12-24, hours as the last time I did that it was the worst bird I had ever turned out. That was probably 12-15 years ago and my wife wouldn’t let me ever air dry a bird again.

But, dry brine and air dry I’m gonna do.

my best turkey was cut up like a chicken, then each piece was monitored by temperature for doneness. On the breast they were wrapped in foil in the 130 degree temp area, with a 1/2 stick of butter and a generous portion of honey maybe 1/4 cup until they hit the 165 degree temp; Everyone loved the white meat these were not brined, just a little salt, pepper and garlic then in the smoke.
