Ham Hocks and HamBeans

Postby OldUsedParts » Sun May 16, 2021 2:02 pm

Fixed a pkg of various dried beans and turned them into the best Ham/Bean Soup I've ever had.
I'm thinking that the key to success was boiling the smoked ham hocks separately, removing skin and the deboning the meat and cutting it into tasty chewable size.(almost like chili meat or coarse burger meat. Another thing that I did was chop and brown two slices of bacon and then use that to sautee the own-yawns. The rest of the ingredients besides beans and water was rotel and Suckle Busters SPG. :chef:

Parts, you kill the cornbread each and every time.

Thanks, Friend, that's what the wife always says but I must give all the credit to Martha White's Sweet Yellow Cornbread Mix and my heirloom Castiron Skillet that has been kept seasoned for many many years and preheated before each use.

I love cornbread but the only time I really get any is out here offshore. Guess I may need to get me one of those little CI pans.

If you do then let me know and I'll tell you how to season and keep it seasoned the easy way :salut:
Nothing, has ever been baked in that Skillet except cornbread. :chef:

There's one thing that most don't know and that is that when cornbread is baking, it's like when a cake is baking. If you stomp/walk hard past the oven while baking, the top will cave in (fall), especially don't slam the oven door when baking.

Sooner, what are you cooking today?

Pork butt for tonight

Meatloaf for tomorrow night

A chicken in hopes I can sweet talk the wife into making me some chicken salad for lunches

Like Rambo said, Lodge is a good product but most heavy built pure cast iron Skillets should be ok also. It's the skillet I've always used for cornbread and works fine with pkg Mixes. It is 9" across the top rim (diameter) and produces cornbread that is about 1" thick +- across the pan.

I like the shape of this one but it's not a Lodge.

Just look and compare it to the Lodges and see if the quality/finish is equal.
