There is a scrap yard at 529 and 290. Never used it but it has been there a long time.

I sent a message to a friend of mine that should know and I'll let you know what he says when I hear back

I haven't had any luck with scrapyards over here by Port Arthur. It just turned out to be a waste of time, I go to the steel supplier now.

Back in the 70's a local scrap yard sold a bunch of surplus medical equipment to a smelter outfit in Mexico and included some radioactive material that found it's way into folding metal chairs which were sold here in the states.
Very bad juju resulting.
Since then I wonder about the safety of random pieces of scrap and I too prefer nice new metal.
Used car parts are of course the exception since it's easy to see where they came from.

Years ago here in Beaumont we had steel yard that dealt with nothing but drops from places and I used them a lot. They have since closed and I just use new material now. By the time you scrounge through used stuff to find what may work you will have saved time buying new. Prices are pretty low right now with a full 48" x 96" #9 flat expanded sheet going for about 50.00.
Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

My steel supplier has some bins of drops and such. It’s all indoors. Rusty steel that you have to wire wheel or grind first isn’t worth the hassle.
