Patina or Something Else - New Pit Build...
I'm finishing up my new 150 gallon smoker trailer build, and I'm on the fence on what to do with the tank. The original paint has flaked off during the burning in period. I sanded the remnants off, so now It's mostly down to bare metal. Should I just clear coat it as is, or should I just oil it down with canola/corn oil and call it good? Looking for suggestions here.

Maybe use a high temp paint?
Found this, but will probably be cheaper elsewhere.

No idea how it will last but clear coat would look cool - definitely ask KAM

Very nice build indeed.
I am not a fan of the oil coats as they require a lot of maintenance. The new thing going now on some builds is a high heat clear coat but I am not sure of its longevity as it is just becoming popular. My preference for longevity is sand blasting and priming with a good inorganic zinc primer then top coat with a high heat satin black.

Being a complete Novice to offsets and stick burning, I was wondering if black wouldn't be better for absorbing and holding heat (rather than a reflective surface ? Or does it really make any difference

In my opinion the color of the pit doesn't really play into its performance. Satin black is easy to keep clean while other colors once stained are just not appealing to me. I have seen some really nice paint jobs and if you take care of them they will last but sooner or later a repaint will be needed and that can be expensive.
